Encephalitis in India

Seasonal encephalitis has led to 38 deaths so far from this in 2013 – this number will rise as the monsoon weather approaches and there are more mosquitoes. Although not all cases are caused by Japanese encephalitis, travellers can be vaccinated against this strain of encephailitis, which is a most serious disease. Japanese encephalitis is endemic in all countries of the southern and south-east Asia. Travellers should also make sure they sleep under nets, and ‘cover up’ when outside in the hours of dusk & darkness. A good insect repellent should be used on exposed areas of shin.
