Baltimore Eye Surgeon Now Performing Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

lasik, eye surgery, baltimore md, eyelid surgery, eye surgeon

Baltimore, MD – According to the Administration on Aging (AOA), persons 65 and older represented nearly 13% of the U.S. population in 2009, and are expected to represent 19% by 2030. The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that the number of older Americans in the workforce is growing as well. As the population and workforce ages, Baltimore eye surgeon Jay C. Grochmal, MD says his patients that are late stage baby-boomers are under extreme pressure to maintain a high level of performance in the workplace, and portraying a vivacious and youthful appearance is essential to continued success.

While helping patients improve their vision with procedures such as LASIK and cataract surgery is important to success in the workplace, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to help his patients enhance their aesthetic appearance has become an important part of his practice as well. He says this growing demand for increased confidence and a natural-looking enhancement is what led him to the decision to add cosmetic eyelid surgery to his list of procedures: “Our society places such a high value on appearance and equates a youthful look with the likelihood of business and social success. Baby boomers are still very active and productive and a refreshed look can eliminate unwarranted bias in career choices.”

As the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. continues to increase, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to look younger longer is obvious, adding that a tough economy and high unemployment rate further contribute to the stress his older patients must endure. Because he constantly strives to improve patient care while providing the latest and safest procedures, Dr. Grochmal says providing cosmetic treatments for his patients is a result of his original commitment to provide the most effective treatments available to meet any and all needs of his patients: “As the cliche goes now, 50 is the new 40 and 60 is the new 50, and so on. My patients want to look as young as they feel and be able to see well too. Ultimately, we believe providing cosmetic eyelid surgery will improve their chances of success in the workplace.”

Do recovery times differ after LASIK surgery?

Our Fort Worth and Dallas LASIK patients come from varied backgrounds. They have different careers, and their own individual interests. But each patient’s eyes are even more unique. In fact, you may have heard “your eyes are like fingerprints.” You may also be familiar with “eye recognition” as a form of identity verification already in use.

Each of your eyes are uniquely complex and each patient’s needs can vary. In many ways this is why LASIK surgery recovery times can vary too. On average, most people see a significant improvement in their vision within the first 2 to 7 days. Generally, it can take between 3 to 6 months for vision to fully stabilize. But while each patient’s eyes are unique, there are post-surgery basics all patients should keep in mind that can help their recovery, for example:

Your eyes need time to heal. While the LASIK procedure is usually simple, quick, and painless, it is still surgery and each eye needs to heal and adjust.

Avoid rubbing your eyes. Discomfort, sensitivity to light, blurry or hazy vision and watery eyes are common right after surgery. These naturally make you want to rub your eyes, but this will gradually improve in the first few days. Plus, your doctor will likely prescribe a mild pain reliever to help.

Keep follow up appointments. These generally start at 24 to 48 hours after surgery and extend to regular appointments over a few months. During follow up, vision is tested and evaluated at various intervals. Typically, patients are told to avoid the following: non-contact sports 1 to 3 days after surgery; lotions, creams or make up around the eye for up to 2 weeks; strenuous contact sports for at least 4 weeks; and swimming or hot tubs for 1 to 2 months.

What else? LASIK continues to improve in safety and effectiveness, and post-surgery complications are rare when compared to patients without them. If considering LASIK, you should be thoroughly evaluated to make sure you’re a LASIK candidate. If not, ask your doctor about other effective alternatives. What’s more, your doctor should always be up front with you, look after your total health, and do everything possible to ensure optimum results and ease of recovery.

Recovery may vary depending on severity of eye condition, patient health, and other factors for patients found to be LASIK candidates. Always seek the advice of a board-certified eye doctor for information related to your particular condition.

Laugh More

I remember reading some years ago that children laugh somewhere around 300 – 400 times a day.  In the same article it said that adults laugh as little as 15 times a day.  Wow, that is a huge difference.  To me it is sad statement that as we grow older we “lose” (or maybe we stifle) our ability to laugh.  Me, I love to laugh.  I don’t think that I am quite up to 300 laughs a day…but I get in about 100 a day.  I believe that laughter is beneficial and extremely healing.  I believe that it can be very therapeutic…not only for yourself, but those around you.

Dr. Richard Schulze said in an interview once that he encouraged his patients to learn 1,000 jokes as part of their healing process.  While you might think this to be a tedious and unneccesary task to learn so many jokes, why not instead think of the laughter his patients got from taking on the assignment.  While learning 1,000 jokes do you think their minds were focused on their illness or on laughter?  I’m guessing that they were focused on laughing.

In his groundbreaking book, “Anatomy Of An Illness”, Norman Cousins describes how he started watching “The 3 Stooges” on a daily basis to “activate” his sense of humor and “regain” his laugh.

There is power in laughter.  I encourage you to laugh more every day.  I encourage you to make those around you laugh whenever you can.

Yours In Health!

Major outbreak of Typhoid in Malawi

There have been 30,000 confirmed cases of typhoid fever each month so far this year at Malawi’s central hospital. This disease is spread by food or water contaminated with typhoid organisms (often as a result of inadequate handwashing by the cook or consumer).

Travellers should take care to with hand hygiene and source food or drink from clean and reputable establishments. Drink only water that is pure, and use it to clean the teeth as well.
There is a worldwide shortage of typhoid vaccine at present, and those travelling to areas where clean water is unobtainable should do their best to obtain the vaccine before travel.

Top Treatment Options for Glaucoma

Glaucoma occurs when pressure in the eye damages the optic nerve, often causing vision loss. Some symptoms of the condition include blurred vision, nausea, and eye pain. Common risk factors include age, family history, and any past eye injuries.

Glaucoma is diagnosed following a comprehensive exam, as well as an assessment of medical and family history. Once the condition is diagnosed, your doctor will speak with you about what treatment is right for you. When it comes to treating glaucoma, sooner is better. Waiting may result in further damage, or vision loss.

While there is no cure for glaucoma, there are highly-effective treatments available. Let’s take a closer look at some of these treatments.

  1. Medication. A variety of medication is available to treat glaucoma. Most commonly, patients will use prescription or over-the-counter eye drops. Eye drops are useful for reducing the pressure levels in the eyes that cause glaucoma. Oral medications are usually recommended for patients who are not responding to eye drops. An eye doctor may also recommend a combination of medications, to control eye pressure.
  2. Laser surgery. An outpatient procedure known as “laser trabeculoplasty” is an effective alternative to surgery, for patients who are unresponsive to medication or eye drops. With this procedure, your eye doctor uses a laser beam to open clogged drainage canals in the eye. This allows fluid in the eye to drain easily, reducing pressure in the eye. This may require some downtime, since results of laser surgery take a few weeks to appear.
  3. Surgery. Laser surgery may not always be effective in lowering the pressure in the eye. When medications and laser surgery do not work, more extensive surgery is necessary. Conventional glaucoma surgery involves creating a drainage hole in the eye with a small surgical instrument. The opening will allow fluids to bypass the clogged drainage canals, and flow out of the artificial drainage hole. Glaucoma surgery can be performed several times, if necessary, without risk to the eye.

Another technological first for Eye Consultants of Texas

We are excited to announce that we are the first practice in Dallas/Fort Worth, and Texas, to commercially acquire the Verion™ Image Guided System. The Verion is a fairly recent advancement used in refractive, or “laser-assisted,” cataract surgery. It starts to work at the planning phase to help the surgeon optimize accuracy and efficiency throughout the entire procedure.

Many experts see refractive cataract surgery as a potential game changer. The Verion is designed to help optimize the entire refractive procedure for even better results.

Basically, the Verion creates a detailed map of the eye’s unique features. This is done before cataract surgery, to provide data that allows for more precise placement of the intraocular lens during surgery.

To break this down further, the Verion works this way: A high-resolution image is taken of the patient’s eye, mapping out important details and measurements. This “map” is used by Dr. Labor to more efficiently plan and customize each step of the procedure. The Verion can provide for a more precise incision, as well as for more accurate positioning and alignment of the intraocular lens.

In addition, Dr. Labor can use the Verion in concert with the LenSx® cataract refractive suite and Centurion® Vision System to enhance surgery results even more. These technologies play a specific role related to the basic steps required in cataract surgery: incision, removal of the cataract, and placement of the artificial (intraocular) lens. The LenSx is used for a more precise incision using the femtosecond laser. The Centurion is used for more efficient break up and removal of the cataract. And the Verion helps Dr. Labor efficiently plan and map out the entire procedure.

If you have cataracts or suspect you do, call our office locally at 877-516-4364 to set an appointment. Our team of doctors can further explain if you can benefit from these technologies, and what they can do for you. We’re located just off Highway 114 in Grapevine, convenient to Dallas/Fort Worth.

Baltimore Laser Eye Surgeon Discusses the Future of Advanced Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgeon in Baltimore Discusses the Future of Advanced Procedures

Baltimore, MD — According to the latest statistics from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), cataracts affect nearly 22 million Americans age 40 and older. However, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal, a LASIK and cataract surgeon in Baltimore, says with the recent advancements in cataract surgery, patients do not have to let blurring vision hinder their daily life. Dr. Grochmal discusses the latest innovations in refractive-cataract surgery and how they can benefit patients looking to improve their vision.

At his Baltimore cataract surgery practice, Dr. Grochmal says the aging baby boomer population has brought an influx of patients needing vision correction for cataracts and other age-related conditions. Cataracts develop as people get older and are exhibited in a clouding and opaqueness of the natural lens inside one’s eye, causing vision to blur. The AAO report also shows that by age 80, more than half of all Americans will have visually significant cataracts. Dr. Grochmal says while cataracts can be a bothersome medical issue, the good news is that advancements in ophthalmology and surgical techniques have made clear vision an affordable and effective option through cataract surgery.

With procedures such as laser refractive cataract surgery on the horizon, Dr. Grochmal says treatment is now ultimately safer than ever before and more successful in helping patients achieve improved vision with less dependence on glasses. He says other innovations have helped create smaller incisions for lens extraction and replacement during cataract surgery, and through technology such as the Zeiss IOL Master, doctors can better measure the power of the intraocular lenses and offer more accurate visual results. “With the safety of cataract surgery improving, patients no longer have to wait for their vision to drastically deteriorate before undergoing cataract surgery. Also, the quality of newer IOL’s are allowing excellent vision after surgery,” says Dr. Grochmal.

Thanks to a diverse arsenal of lenses such as toric and multifocal IOL’s, Dr. Grochmal says patients can now enjoy the benefits of custom treatment for their individual eye condition and lifestyle needs. Whether patients wish to enhance their vision up close or far away or find a balance of clarity in both distance and near vision, he says there is a solution for every patient’s desires. Dr. Grochmal says cataract surgery recovery is now also much quicker and requires less trauma to the function of one’s eye. “With such small incisions now possible and the availability of toric IOL’s, post operative astigmatism can be minimized if not completely corrected,” he says.

Regardless of whether patients are looking for cataract surgery or another vision correction procedure such as LASIK in Baltimore, Dr. Grochmal says the advancements in ophthalmology are making significant strides towards helping people attain perfect, lasting eyesight. He adds that he is excited to see the further development of patient comfort and care and hopes patients continue to take advantage of the benefits that procedures like cataract surgery can offer.

Stephanie Sears – Nutritional Therapist

At Abundant Health Center, LLC we are pleased to introduce Stephanie Sears, NTP as our resident Nutritional Therapist. Here is more information on Stephanie and her work.

Stephanie Sears

As a Certified Nutritional Therapist I can help you on your path to optimum health.

I have had bad allergies my entire life. When I learned that by changing my diet and eliminating certain foods I could feel as though I never had allergies.

While researching all of the ways to cure allergies naturally, I came across many simple explanations that linked the allergic symptoms I was experiencing (and many other health issues) to the food we put into our bodies. Once I cleaned up my diet it immediately cleared up my allergy symptoms. Then many of my digestive problems also started to disappear.

On this journey I became increasingly interested in how our bodies work and how important it is to eat clean, nourishing foods. I began to realize how many people endure life feeling sick and take pills that only hide the problems. Then I found a way that I could start to help other people feel better, I found the Nutritional Therapy Association.

That’s a subject for virtually any foreseeable future put up, even while i actually do not in my opinion reckon that performing this online game calculate was the appropriate relocate. The All-Superstar Sport was intended, basically just, that needs to be a thrilling undergo coupled with a superb chance for spectators and game enthusiasts.

Helping patients ‘Find Their Thing’ is key to Exercise as a Vital Sign

Latifat T. Apatira, MD, MPH, fourth-year internal medicine and preventive medicine resident, believes that in order for Exercise as a Vital Sign (EVS) to succeed, health care providers need to help connect patients with resources in the communities where they live – outside of the exam room.

Part four of her seven-part blog highlights the community-clinic component of EVS, in which health care providers point their patients to a wealth of diverse programs and initiatives for fitness – what Dr. Apatira calls “finding their thing.”

The blog features several examples of community-clinic integration that Kaiser Permanente is exploring, as well as Dr. Apatira’s ideas of how to link patients to community resources.

Resources include:

  • City/Community Listings – Most official city websites have listings for activities that support physical activity.
  •  Parks Prescription – A movement to strengthen connections between the health care system and United States public lands, Park Prescription works with providers to encourage patients to get physically active at their local public parks.

Read the full blog to see more of Dr. Apatira’s health and fitness tips, including apps that track exercise levels.

Innovative new surgical instruments bear Dr. Labor’s name

Noted Fort Worth and Dallas eye surgeon Phillips Kirk Labor, MD, has his name associated with three innovative new cataract surgical instruments on the market. Manufactured by industry leader Katena Products, Inc., each is based on modification by Dr. Labor of an existing instrument to accommodate patients with smaller or deeper set eyes. Based on Dr. Labor’s modifications, the instruments are designed for surgeons to more easily handle in performing certain procedures during cataract surgery, as well as for improved efficiency, precision, and patient safety.

It is a distinction few eye surgeons have achieved, which reflects the Eye Consultants of Texas founder’s devotion to innovation as key to continually improved outcomes. “No doubt, this is a tremendous honor,” Dr. Labor said. “When originally modifying these instruments, however, I had the patient and only the patient in mind.”
The three instruments with the “Labor” name are part of Katena’s full product line, and include:

Labor A/C Cannula
The Labor A/C Cannula is designed for positioning an intraocular lens (IOL) without damaging the optic. From Dr. Labor’s modification, it uses a thinner 26 gauge, with lightly textured tip to further enhance this benefit for the surgeon.

Labor-Lester IOL Manipulator
The Labor-Lester IOL Manipulator is an angled instrument for use with intraoperative diagnostic equipment, such as the ORA System. Because of ORA’s revolutionary configuration, this reduces working space under the microscope. Dr. Labor’s modification shortens the handle to 29mm in order to solve this issue.

Labor Cyclodialysis Spatula
From Dr. Labor’s modification, the Labor Cyclodialysis Spatula has a slightly vaulted 0.5mm wide surface with beveled tip and short handle. It’s designed for use with intraoperative diagnostic equipment that reduces working space under the microscope.

If you’d like to know more about cataract surgery at Eye Consultants of Texas, or schedule a cataract evaluation, call us locally at 866-516-4364. We’re conveniently located in Grapevine and easily accessible from anywhere in the DFW Metroplex.

Katena Products, Inc. is the largest independently owned American company dedicated exclusively to ophthalmic surgical instrumentation, serving over 7,000 customers in the U.S., and more than 100 countries around the world. To learn more, visit www.katena.com
