The Many Ways Seniors Can Benefit from a 5-star Medicare Health Plan

medicare5starRatingSystem_feb28_2014_300dpi_PRINT_READYMedicare’s Special Enrollment Period is underway for 5-star plans. What does that mean? It means that seniors and other Medicare-eligible beneficiaries have an opportunity to join a top quality, 5-star Medicare health plan outside of the regular open enrollment period. They may enroll in a 5-star plan from now through November 30, 2014 instead of waiting for mid-October when the Annual Enrollment Period begins.

The Medicare Star Quality Rating system is a simple way to help consumers compare health plans. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services assigns Medicare health plans an overall star rating between 1 and 5 stars, with 5 being the highest for quality and service.

If you’d like to learn more about the Medicare Star Quality Ratings, see the infographic above for more 5-star facts (click for a larger view), or visit kp.org/medicarestars and kp.org/share for the latest news and information. Also, check out kp.org/carestories for health-related member videos.

Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-star rating system. Star ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next. Seniors and individuals with disabilities must meet applicable enrollment criteria and live where a 5-star plan is offered.

Changes are Coming to Your Health Savings Accounts

It’s the season of open enrollment for health insurance plans, and if you have an HSA (Health Spending Account – sometimes called a Health Reimbursement or Flex Spending Account), it’s time to max it out! Tax laws have changed, and this coming year, 2012, is the last year that you can place the maximum $5,000 in your HSA. Starting in 2013, the maximum allowed in any Health Savings Account will be $2,500, which means that the entire cost of laser eye surgeries such as LASIK cannot be covered by your HSA pre-tax dollars after 2012.

If you have questions about the coming changes, or if you would like to set up a consultation for LASIK or other laser vision correction procedures, please contact Grochmal Eye Center at (410) 697-4090.

Baltimore Ophthalmologist Addresses the Importance of Routine Eye Exams

dr jay c grochmal, baltimore lasik, baltimore ophthalmologist, baltimore cataracts

At Grochmal Eye Center, ophthalmologist Dr. Jay C. Grochmal encourages patients to attend eye exams on a regular basis for the prevention and early detection of eye diseases.

Baltimore, MD - Dr. Jay C. Grochmal, an ophthalmologist in Baltimore, advises his patients at Grochmal Eye Center to schedule a regular eye exam every one to three years, depending on the age and health of the individual. By doing so, he is able to check for a variety of visual and muscular problems that can easily go undetected and permanently damage sight.

The frequency of exams depends on the needs of each patient and any pre-existing medical conditions. He recommends patients over 40 get a complete eye exam every two years, which is especially important for those with cataracts or glaucoma. For patients with diabetes, he advises more frequent eye exams with at least one per year to monitor any changes.

According to Dr. Grochmal, eye exams can be made less frequently with younger patients, as they have a lower risk of developing severe eye problems. He points out they can get by with an appointment every three years. At approximately age six, Dr. Grochmal encourages parents to set up a baseline exam for their children. However, if there is a family history of eye muscle problems and signs are apparent in the child, an exam should be made around age three or earlier.

“The reason for regular exams goes well beyond ‘good’ vision,” Dr Grochmal explains. He identifies these exams as preventative measures for his patients. Since many medical diseases have adverse signs within the eye, and inherent eye diseases can manifest silently, not showing many, if any symptoms early on, they can be progressing unchecked, causing needless damage. To detect problems early and prevent permanent damage, Dr. Grochmal performs a thorough inspection of his patients’ eyes.

During these exams, Dr. Grochmal monitors any visual or muscular changes. Depending on the patient’s unique case and whether they have undergone vision correction procedures such as LASIK or PRK, additional tests may be needed for effective disease prevention; but generally, patients can expect the following in a complete exam:

  • Vision check with and without glasses
  • Careful exam of the orbital area including eyelids
  • Eye muscle balance evaluation
  • Magnified exam of the eye interior from the cornea to the retina
  • Measurement of intraocular pressure

With their personal touch and advanced technology, Dr. Grochmal says the physicians at Grochmal Eye Center are helping preserve and improve patient eye health one routine screening at a time. Overall, he stresses the importance of frequent eye exams with an experienced and qualified ophthalmologist.

About Jay C. Grochmal, MD

After graduating from the University of Maryland, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal interned at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Three years later, he was named Chief Resident at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology before completing his residency. It was at this point when Dr. Grochmal opened his private practice in ophthalmology. In addition to his eye center, he is on the staff of top Baltimore hospitals, including the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and St. Agnes Hospital. He currently is the medical director at Snowden River Surgery Center (one of the busiest ambulatory centers for eye surgery in the state). Dr. Grochmal is available for interview upon request.

Enhance Your Eyelashes with Latisse™ Today

The first and only eyelash treatment approved by the FDA, Latisse™ can help you grow full and natural-looking lashes while simultaneously treating you for hypotrichosis, a condition that prevents hair growth. Latisse is a great way to reverse the effects of this condition and enhance the look of your eyes, requiring only a simple application each night. After a few weeks, your lashes will be fuller, longer, and thicker than you’ve ever seen them. Ready to learn more about what Latisse can do for you?

5 Need-to-Know Latisse™ Facts

  1. Latisse contains an active ingredient known as bimatoprost, which was first used in glaucoma medication and is believed to promote hair growth.
  2. The medication does not work as mascara; in fact, you should remove any make-up or contacts before applying it to the base of your eyelashes each day. You should never use the same applicator for both eyes, and never re-use an applicator for even one more night, as this could result in an allergic reaction or eye infection.
  3. Results will start to become visible after 4 weeks, with full results manifesting by 16 weeks. Lashes will gradually grow darker, longer, and thicker.
  4. Side effects are rare, but may include itching, redness, or dryness in the eye area. Other potential side effects include eyelid darkening or brown pigmentation of the iris, both of which are very rare occurrences.
  5. Through a series of studies, the FDA has deemed Latisse as safe for most people. However, patients with pre-existing eye problems and women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid this treatment. Patients who are taking any kind of intraocular pressure lowering medications should consult their eye doctor before taking Latisse, so that he or she can closely monitor the patient’s eye pressure.

Take A Walk On The Grass

Take A Walk On The Grass

When is the last time that you took off your shoes and yours socks and you walked barefoot on the grass.  If you’re older than twelve I’m guessing it has been quite some time.  It’s funny, when we’re kids, if we see a mud puddle we JUMP right in it.  When we become adults we walk around the mud puddle.  Not only do we walk around the mud puddle…we complain about it!

Stop complaining.  It’s not really serving you.  Start living.  Get outside and re-connect with our planet.  This isn’t some hippy dippy statement.  We (human beings) are electrical beings.  That’s right, we are electrical beings.  Electricity is constantly flowing through our bodies.   In fact, without electricity you wouldn’t be reading this post right now.  Without electricity running through your body your brain would cease to function.

Sometimes we need to re-charge.  We need to “ground” ourselves.  One of the ways to do this is by getting outside and walking barefoot on the grass.  While you’re walking (barefoot of course) do some deep breathing – you’ll be accomplishing two things at the same time (there is nothing like multi-tasking when it comes to your health).  Walking barefoot on the grass will “ground” you, literally.  Doing this will help you release built up electrical energy that’s in your body.

As stated above, your entire nervous system is run on electrical energy.  Get walking, ground yourself, do your deep breathing, and make some positive changes in your life.  This doesn’t cost you a dime.  What have you got to lose?

Baltimore Eye Surgeon Now Performing Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

lasik, eye surgery, baltimore md, eyelid surgery, eye surgeon

Baltimore, MD – According to the Administration on Aging (AOA), persons 65 and older represented nearly 13% of the U.S. population in 2009, and are expected to represent 19% by 2030. The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that the number of older Americans in the workforce is growing as well. As the population and workforce ages, Baltimore eye surgeon Jay C. Grochmal, MD says his patients that are late stage baby-boomers are under extreme pressure to maintain a high level of performance in the workplace, and portraying a vivacious and youthful appearance is essential to continued success.

While helping patients improve their vision with procedures such as LASIK and cataract surgery is important to success in the workplace, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to help his patients enhance their aesthetic appearance has become an important part of his practice as well. He says this growing demand for increased confidence and a natural-looking enhancement is what led him to the decision to add cosmetic eyelid surgery to his list of procedures: “Our society places such a high value on appearance and equates a youthful look with the likelihood of business and social success. Baby boomers are still very active and productive and a refreshed look can eliminate unwarranted bias in career choices.”

As the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. continues to increase, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to look younger longer is obvious, adding that a tough economy and high unemployment rate further contribute to the stress his older patients must endure. Because he constantly strives to improve patient care while providing the latest and safest procedures, Dr. Grochmal says providing cosmetic treatments for his patients is a result of his original commitment to provide the most effective treatments available to meet any and all needs of his patients: “As the cliche goes now, 50 is the new 40 and 60 is the new 50, and so on. My patients want to look as young as they feel and be able to see well too. Ultimately, we believe providing cosmetic eyelid surgery will improve their chances of success in the workplace.”

About Jay C. Grochmal, MD

After earning his medical degree from the University of Maryland, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal completed his residency while achieving the rank of Chief Resident at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology. In addition to being on staff at some of the leading hospitals in the Baltimore area, Dr. Grochmal has traveled on a number of missions dedicated to improving eye care around the world.

Grochmal Eye Center is located in the Catonsville Professional Center at 405 Frederick Rd., Ste. 102, Baltimore, MD 21228, and can be reached at (410) 697-4090. Dr. Grochmal and his team can also be reached at grochmaleye.com or their Baltimore Eye Care Facebook page.

What are Cataracts?

It’s no secret that our eyesight gradually decreases as we age. However, certain conditions may cause the loss of vision to happen more rapidly. Cataracts are a common cause of vision loss, affecting millions of people over the age of 65.

But what exactly are cataracts?

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens within the eye, which can slowly diminish one’s vision. This clouding is caused by a buildup or protein within the lens, and it can become increasingly worse over time. In a healthy eye, the lens is clear and allows light to pass through easily to reach the retina — the light-sensitive tissue located at the back of the eye. Eyes with cataracts, on the other hand, have a cloudy lens which results in blurred vision.

There is no one factor that causes the development of cataracts. However, many eye doctors believe that certain habits, such as smoking, may put a person at risk for developing this condition. Additionally, health conditions like diabetes and overexposure to ultraviolet light have also been linked to the development of cataracts.

Some patients who develop cataracts may experience no symptoms of the condition at all, while many experience blurred or double vision. Other possible signs include frequent prescription changes in contact lenses or eyeglasses, as well as a diminished ability to see clearly at night.

For most patients, treating cataracts will require surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the country today, and offers patients extremely effective results. It is a minimally-invasive procedure, with the main goal of removing the damaged lens from the eye. The damaged lens will then be replaced with an IOL (artificial intraocular lens).

Following this procedure, patients may experience some mild discomfort and itchiness. For several days after, eyes may also be extremely sensitive to light. Fortunately, any discomfort is usually mild and typically lasts only a few days. Patients who undergo this surgery will need to protect their eyes afterwards, and will have to avoid rubbing their eye as they recover.

Healthy Buildings: Reducing Use of Harmful Chemicals

Yesterday at the Center for Total Health, the U.S. Green Building Council  welcomed Arlene Blum, Ph.D., author, mountaineer, and founder of the Green Science Policy Institute, for a discussion of “Six Classes” – chemicals of concern, the science and policy of flame retardant chemicals, and the national health impacts of California’s changing flammability standards.

Rather than addressing the tens of thousands of chemicals on the market one at a time, the SixClasses.org project educates decision makers in manufacturing, retail and government –  as well as consumers — about the “Six Classes” that contain many of the harmful chemicals in consumer products and building materials. The class approach can prevent regrettable substitutions, where a toxic chemical is removed and replaced by a chemical cousin with similar harmful properties.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Eyes Healthy this Winter

The winter months can often be brutal. The bitter cold and unpredictable weather can not only take a toll on your life, but can also cause considerable damage to your eyes.

Here are some tips for keeping your eyes healthy and safe throughout the winter.

3 Tips For Keeping Your Eyes Healthy this Winter:

  1. Keep your eyes moist. Spending time indoors with the heat turned up can cause your eyes to become dry and irritated. For patients with chronic dry eye, a condition that hinders the eyes’ ability to produce tears naturally, this is especially a concern. In order to prevent your eyes from becoming dry, keep your eyes lubricated by using artificial tears. This will keep the eyes healthy, comfortable, and most importantly, moisturized. Patients may also find it helpful to use a humidifier to prevent dryness in a room.
  2. Wear sunglasses with Ultraviolet (UV) protection. Most people think that UV rays only pose a danger to the eyes during the summer. In reality, snowy conditions can double the impact of the sun’s rays! During the winter, UV rays enter your eyes from above and reflect off the snow on the ground. Because of this, it is extremely important that patients wear sunglasses that can provide the right level of protection. If you need a pair of prescription sunglasses with UV protection, schedule a routine eye exam. During an extremely bright day, it is also a good idea to wear a visor or hat if you will be outside for a long period of time. For an outdoor sport, like skiing, wear goggles to protect your eyes.
  3. Make sure your children’s eyes are protected. As most parents know, children do not always want to wear protective goggles or sunglasses when they are playing outside during the winter. However, protecting a young child’s eyes is essential in preventing conditions such as photokeratitis (”snow blindness.”) Snow blindness is an often painful condition that occurs when eyes have been overexposed to UV rays. Parents should also remember to replace their child’s goggles and sunglasses every few years, in order to ensure the child’s eyes are sufficiently protected.

Stephanie Sears – Nutritional Therapist

At Abundant Health Center, LLC we are pleased to introduce Stephanie Sears, NTP as our resident Nutritional Therapist. Here is more information on Stephanie and her work.

Stephanie Sears

As a Certified Nutritional Therapist I can help you on your path to optimum health.

I have had bad allergies my entire life. When I learned that by changing my diet and eliminating certain foods I could feel as though I never had allergies.

While researching all of the ways to cure allergies naturally, I came across many simple explanations that linked the allergic symptoms I was experiencing (and many other health issues) to the food we put into our bodies. Once I cleaned up my diet it immediately cleared up my allergy symptoms. Then many of my digestive problems also started to disappear.

On this journey I became increasingly interested in how our bodies work and how important it is to eat clean, nourishing foods. I began to realize how many people endure life feeling sick and take pills that only hide the problems. Then I found a way that I could start to help other people feel better, I found the Nutritional Therapy Association.

Real Life Rosies!

Today, the Center for Total Health team was delighted to host six real-life Rosies, so-called for the famous Rosie the Riveter of World War II. These women worked in Kaiser Shipyards — where Kaiser Permanente was born — while their friends, brothers, husbands, and neighbors were at war. They were among the first women hired for these jobs, and the first admitted into the Boilermakers Union.

In addition to the well-known Rosie image, we loved this poster showing safe shipyard attire.

The women are in Washington, DC, to meet with Vice President Joe Biden, President Obama, and other senior government officials. See all the pictures here. You can read more about them, and World War II in the shipyards, on the History of Total Health Blog.

Increasing malaria in Greece

Malaria cases in Greece are increasing each summer, and whilst most of the cases are occurring in the more rural parts of the country away from the main tourist areas, travellers should be aware of the situation. There is not enough malaria present to warrant taking anti-malarial medication, but travellers to affected areas should sleep in air-conditioned rooms or under treated mosquito nets, and should cover up when out during the hours of dusk & darkness. An effective insect repellent should be used on exposed areas. Any fever occurring up to a year after visiting a country with malaria should be taken seriously, and medical help should be sought – don’t forget to mention that you have visited a malaria endemic country.

Laugh More

I remember reading some years ago that children laugh somewhere around 300 – 400 times a day.  In the same article it said that adults laugh as little as 15 times a day.  Wow, that is a huge difference.  To me it is sad statement that as we grow older we “lose” (or maybe we stifle) our ability to laugh.  Me, I love to laugh.  I don’t think that I am quite up to 300 laughs a day…but I get in about 100 a day.  I believe that laughter is beneficial and extremely healing.  I believe that it can be very therapeutic…not only for yourself, but those around you.

Dr. Richard Schulze said in an interview once that he encouraged his patients to learn 1,000 jokes as part of their healing process.  While you might think this to be a tedious and unneccesary task to learn so many jokes, why not instead think of the laughter his patients got from taking on the assignment.  While learning 1,000 jokes do you think their minds were focused on their illness or on laughter?  I’m guessing that they were focused on laughing.

In his groundbreaking book, “Anatomy Of An Illness”, Norman Cousins describes how he started watching “The 3 Stooges” on a daily basis to “activate” his sense of humor and “regain” his laugh.

There is power in laughter.  I encourage you to laugh more every day.  I encourage you to make those around you laugh whenever you can.

Yours In Health!

Recovery After LASIK Surgery

Dr. Labor has successfully performed LASIK surgery on patients from across Dallas/Fort Worth. Our LASIK patients come from various walks of life with their own individual careers, backgrounds, and interests. But everyone wants (and deserves) to know about their recovery and how long it will take.

You may have heard that “your eyes are like fingerprints.” You may also be familiar with “eye recognition” as a form of identity verification that’s already in use. Each of your eyes are uniquely complex, and each patient’s needs can vary. In many ways this is why recovery times can vary too. The majority of our LASIK patients tell us they can see better right after surgery. On average, most people see a significant improvement in their vision within the first 2 to 7 days. Generally, it can take between 3 to 6 months for a patient’s vision to fully stabilize.

Recovery can depend on what happens after as well as during the procedure. In other words, following doctor’s orders after surgery matters…a lot. Especially with the eye being such a delicate and important part of every human body. A few important things to remember for after surgery:

Don’t rub your eyes. Every patient hears this right after their procedure. Rubbing the eyes can effect recovery or possibly cause further treatment. Discomfort, sensitivity to light, blurry/hazy vision, or watery eyes are common symptoms, and gradually improve in the first few days. The doctor will often recommend a mild pain reliever to help.

Keep your follow up appointments. These usually start at 24 to 48 hours after surgery, and extend to regular appointments over a few months. During follow up, vision is tested and evaluated at various intervals. Patients are told to avoid the following: non-contact sports 1 to 3 days after surgery; lotions, creams or make up around the eye for up to 2 weeks; strenuous contact sports for at least 4 weeks; and swimming or hot tubs for 1 to 2 months.

What else? LASIK continues to improve in safety and effectiveness, with post-surgery complications rare compared to patients with no complications. If considering LASIK, you should be thoroughly evaluated long before your procedure to make sure you’re a candidate (if not a candidate, there are other effective alternatives). What’s more, your doctor should be up front with you, look after your total health, and do everything possible to ensure optimum results and ease of recovery.

Recovery times, follow up procedures and scheduling may vary depending on severity of eye condition, health, and other factors for patients found to be LASIK candidates. Always confer with a Board Certified eye doctor for information related to your particular condition.
