Baltimore Ophthalmologist Provides Premium IOLs That Reduce Or Eliminate Cataract Patients’ Dependency On Glasses

For cataract patients, Dr. Jay C. Grochmal offers a variety of Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) that can help patients attain clear vision after surgery without heavy reliance on corrective eyewear.

Baltimore, MD – Dr. Jay C. Grochmal, a Baltimore ophthalmologist, provides comprehensive eye care at his private practice, with procedures including LASIK, glaucoma treatment, and cataract surgery. With traditional cataract surgery, many patients have their natural lens replaced with a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) to help them restore clear vision once the cataract has been removed. However, after correcting for near or far distance vision, the monofocal IOL may still require the patient to wear glasses after treatment. While standard monocular IOL procedures are often covered by a patient’s health insurance, Dr. Grochmal says there are certain advantages that premium IOLs provide. He highlights that Alcon’s Toric IOL is very successful in correcting even high amounts of astigmatism (a common optical condition that causes blurry vision), and multifocal lenses in general are effective in significantly decreasing one’s dependence on glasses. He says many patients who receive multifocal lenses do not need to wear glasses at all after the procedure.

Grochmal Eye Center now uses the Zeiss IOL Master 500 for premium IOL procedures. The innovative technology of the Zeiss IOL Master 500 allows advanced calculations that measure the IOL power necessary to obtain optimal results for each patient. With this new technology, Dr. Grochmal is able to combine the results of the Zeiss IOL Master with his attention to surgical detail to produce distance vision improved to the point that his patients rarely require glasses afterward.

Multifocal IOLs can also be helpful for patients who do not suffer from cataracts but are looking to reduce their dependence on corrective eyewear. Patients who are not eligible for LASIK or other laser eye surgery procedures often qualify for premium IOLs, which have similar benefits. However, some patients who have already had monofocal IOL surgery may not be ideal candidates for the procedure. According to Dr. Grochmal, once a monofocal IOL is placed within the capsular bag of the eye, it is not safe to replace that IOL unless the exchange is done within a month of the initial surgery.

Dr. Grochmal stresses that multifocal IOLs are best used in healthy eyes that have no other eye diseases present, aside from cataracts.

How entertainment can facilitate difficult health conversations with teens

Sometimes the best way to broach sensitive health topics with young people is through an unconventional avenue – such as Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre Program, as mentioned in yesterday’s post.

The great thing about live theatre, according to Hannah Cordero of Kaiser Permanente, is that you can take a very difficult subject, like HIV/AIDS, and make it relevant and approachable to teens.

Cordero is part of Northern California’s Educational Theatre Program, which among many educational performances offers “Secrets,” a production that uses the power of live theatre to communicate the facts and dispel the myths about HIV/AIDS and sexual transmitted infections. The characters in the performance model effective negotiation skills and encourage young people to discuss difficult topics with their partners, friends, and adults in their lives. Since it’s inception in 1985, over 1.5 million people have seen “Secrets” throughout Northern California.

In this video, Cordero talks about how they’ve make “Secrets” relevant to students over the years. She adds that while students are now more aware about HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections, their program helps aid students in communicating skills.

ETP is offered to schools and communities free of charge in each of Kaiser Permanente’s eight regions. The program covers important health topics, such as healthy eating, physical activity, diversity, peer pressure, conflict management, bullying prevention, domestic violence, dealing with grief and loss, depression, sexually transmitted diseases, literacy promotion, and drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. Tough Topics and Kids: Using Theatre to Talk HIV/AIDS

Even after more than three decades since the first diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, Dr. Richard Tharp, PhD of Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre Program in the MidAtantic States, said it is still a very controversial subject to talk about with students.

“We hear from some school districts who tell us that their kids aren’t sexually active, so they feel there’s no reason for a show like this,” Tharp said. “But the schools who have seen our production, “Secrets,” understand the value behind it. Throughout the show we use a lot of irony, humor and music, while at the same time we are giving them valuable information, so they can make the right choices. Additionally, through the magic of theatre, we are able to approach a very serious topic and begin critical conversations with students.”

This year, Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic Educational Theatre Program celebrates 20 years of performing “Secrets,” a play for high school students that unmasks the reality behind HIV/AIDS. Students explore resisting peer pressure, positive decision-making, abstinence, parent-teen communications and resource building.

In this video, Dr.Tharp of the Mid-Atlantic Educational Theatre Program talks about how the production has changed over the last 20 years and how, through the art of theatre, they’ve been able to discuss this critical health topic with teens.

Kaiser Permanente’s ETP departments are committed to working with schools and nonprofit organizations to pinpoint issues and customize services specific to their needs. Each of Kaiser Permanente’s eight regions has its own ETP program which provides multiple interventions into the community. The programs are developed by theatre professionals in collaboration with health educators, community advisory committees and Kaiser Permanente physicians. Take A Walk On The Grass

When is the last time that you took off your shoes and yours socks and you walked barefoot on the grass. If you’re older than twelve I’m guessing it has been quite some time. It’s funny, when we’re kids, if we see a mud puddle we JUMP right in it. When we become adults we walk around the mud puddle. Not only do we walk around the mud puddle…we complain about it!

Stop complaining. It’s not really serving you. Start living. Get outside and re-connect with our planet. This isn’t some hippy dippy statement. We (human beings) are electrical beings. That’s right, we are electrical beings. Electricity is constantly flowing through our bodies. In fact, without electricity you wouldn’t be reading this post right now. Without electricity running through your body your brain would cease to function.

Sometimes we need to re-charge. We need to “ground” ourselves. One of the ways to do this is by getting outside and walking barefoot on the grass. While you’re walking (barefoot of course) do some deep breathing – you’ll be accomplishing two things at the same time (there is nothing like multi-tasking when it comes to your health). Walking barefoot on the grass will “ground” you, literally. Doing this will help you release built up electrical energy that’s in your body.

As stated above, your entire nervous system is run on electrical energy. Get walking, ground yourself, do your deep breathing, and make some positive changes in your life. This doesn’t cost you a dime. What have you got to lose?

Our First Crystalens Workshop And Brunch A Huge Success

The first Eye Consultants of Texas Crystalens Workshop and Brunch was recently held June 29, 2013 at our Grapevine offices. This was open to anyone who had a Crystalens® intraocular lens (IOL) implant or is considering Crystalens. In addition, area Optometrists who managed Crystalens patients were also invited.

We are very proud that over 50 people attended who were eager to learn how to get the most out of Crystalens implants. What’s more, many of our guests requested that we do this again, and often.

Starting at 10:00 AM, guests were treated to a free brunch. This allowed people from across Dallas/Fort Worth to meet, share experiences, and discuss their common interest in Crystalens. This was followed by Eye Consultants of Texas founder, Phillips Kirk Labor, MD who discussed the importance of eye exercises and other important aspects for improving post-surgery results. Also appearing was his wife, Dr. Penny Labor, a Crystalens patient herself, who discussed her own procedure and post-surgery experiences.

Patty Turknett, one of Dr. Labor’s Crystalens patients in attendance, said of the event:

“Thanks for taking the time to explain our cataract surgery and for providing a testimony for the Crystalens. It was very informative and interesting. I’m inspired to take my glasses off during my work day. When I walked out to my car [after the event], there was a pair of reading glasses on the ground, so someone must have thrown them down! When are you too old to have LASIK?

We continue to grow in the number of LASIK procedures we perform on patients across Dallas/Fort Worth. The question of age, understandably, is one that comes up often in potential LASIK patients. Starting at the minimum required age of 18, LASIK can generally be performed at any age.

The biggest issues that determines if someone is a LASIK candidate? Eye health and general health. There can’t be any presence of cataracts or glaucoma for example. Additional considerations: a family history of corneal disorders, diabetes or other eye disorders.

As our eyes get older, we’re more likely to develop specific conditions, such as cataracts. This is why LASIK is more commonly performed on patients into their 40’s and younger. LASIK, however, can correct the gradual need for reading glasses (called presbyopia) that’s so common after age 40. This may involve a type of added treatment called “monovision,” which often applies to special cases.

“The main thing to keep in mind is that a surgeon should carefully, and diligently, examine every potential LASIK candidate to see if there will be even the slightest problem,” said Eye Consultants of Texas founder, Phillips Kirk Labor, MD. “This is to get the absolute best results regardless of age.”

In recent years, Baby Boomers have been increasingly requesting LASIK. This generation is living longer, and wanting to look younger is more common than ever before. Major outbreak of Typhoid in Malawi

There have been 30,000 confirmed cases of typhoid fever each month so far this year at Malawi’s central hospital. This disease is spread by food or water contaminated with typhoid organisms (often as a result of inadequate handwashing by the cook or consumer).

Travellers should take care to with hand hygiene and source food or drink from clean and reputable establishments. Drink only water that is pure, and use it to clean the teeth as well.
There is a worldwide shortage of typhoid vaccine at present, and those travelling to areas where clean water is unobtainable should do their best to obtain the vaccine before travel.

Rabies in northern Greece

Having been rabies free since 1988, (last animal case 1987, last human case 1970), rabies has re-emerged in wild & domestic animals in northern Greece during the last year. There have been reports of rabies virus in neighbouring countries.

Travellers should avoid contact with animals, particularly stray dogs, and should consider vaccination against rabies if planning to walk or camp in remote areas, particularly near national borders with other countries.

Of those patients, 94% reported 20/20 vision, and 74% reported 20/16 vision or better.

Dr. Grochmal notes that CustomVue™ LASIK refractive eye surgery is his preferred way to perform LASIK, as this technology allows the newly reshaped cornea to be custom-tailored for each patient to such a degree that many higher orders of optical aberrations (visual distortions) are corrected. He adds that this custom-tailoring, enhanced by Wavefront™ technology that allows for a more advanced level of precision over traditional refractive eye surgery, typically results in a higher quality visual outcome.

When determining if one of his patients is a candidate for LASIK surgery, Dr. Grochmal evaluates the patient’s tear film, pupil size, corneal thickness, corneal shape, and total refractive state as well as the overall health of the patient’s eyes. Furthermore, Dr. Grochmal says he also discusses the patient’s personal expectations for the procedure to ensure that patients are informed about every step of the LASIK process – from preoperative preparation to postoperative care – and that they achieve the results they are seeking.

Dengue fever in Mombassa, Kenya (and in Angola)

An outbreak of dengue fever has been reported in Mombassa, Kenya, and in Angola. This is the first confirmed outbreak in Mombassa since 1982, and dengue is unusual in Africa, although common in Asia. To reduce your chances of becoming a dengue fever victim, consider covering up towards the late afternoon, when the mosquitoes bite, and apply a good insect repellent to exposed areas of skin.
