How to Keep Your Eyes Protected This Summer
With summer rapidly approaching, it’s time to make sure we take the proper precautions. It’s not only important to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, but our eyes as well. Since exposure to the sun can be damaging to our eyes, preparation is key in keeping them safe. So what exactly is the relationship between the sun’s UV rays and our eyes?
Both short-term and long-term sun exposure to the sun can have damaging consequences. Short-term exposure can cause conditions like photokeratitis, an inflammation of the cornea that can cause eye pain and discomfort — similar to a sunburn. The effects of long-term sun exposure are much more serious, and can include:
- Cataracts
- Macular degeneration
- Pterygia, or benign tissue growth
- Skin cancer near the eyes
How to Protect Your Eyes from the Sun
There are some simple, yet important, steps we can take to help protect our eyes from the sun’s damaging rays. One of the most crucial steps is simply investing in the right pair of sunglasses. When looking for a pair of sunglasses, it’s important to make sure that they block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays, as these will offer the greatest amount of protection. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can also be an effective way to protect your eyes, as they will cover sun that can sneak in through the top or sides of your sunglasses. Additionally, it’s important to be aware of the sun’s peak times – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Extra protection is advised during these times, as this is when the sun is the strongest.
It’s also important to remember that just because it’s cloudy outside, doesn’t mean the sun isn’t out. The sun’s rays can pass through thin clouds, so sunglasses and hats are always important.

Baltimore Eye Surgeon Now Performing Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery
Baltimore, MD – According to the Administration on Aging (AOA), persons 65 and older represented nearly 13% of the U.S. population in 2009, and are expected to represent 19% by 2030. The Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that the number of older Americans in the workforce is growing as well. As the population and workforce ages, Baltimore eye surgeon Jay C. Grochmal, MD says his patients that are late stage baby-boomers are under extreme pressure to maintain a high level of performance in the workplace, and portraying a vivacious and youthful appearance is essential to continued success.
While helping patients improve their vision with procedures such as LASIK and cataract surgery is important to success in the workplace, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to help his patients enhance their aesthetic appearance has become an important part of his practice as well. He says this growing demand for increased confidence and a natural-looking enhancement is what led him to the decision to add cosmetic eyelid surgery to his list of procedures: “Our society places such a high value on appearance and equates a youthful look with the likelihood of business and social success. Baby boomers are still very active and productive and a refreshed look can eliminate unwarranted bias in career choices.”
As the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. continues to increase, Dr. Grochmal says the desire to look younger longer is obvious, adding that a tough economy and high unemployment rate further contribute to the stress his older patients must endure. Because he constantly strives to improve patient care while providing the latest and safest procedures, Dr. Grochmal says providing cosmetic treatments for his patients is a result of his original commitment to provide the most effective treatments available to meet any and all needs of his patients: “As the cliche goes now, 50 is the new 40 and 60 is the new 50, and so on. My patients want to look as young as they feel and be able to see well too. Ultimately, we believe providing cosmetic eyelid surgery will improve their chances of success in the workplace.”

Measles in Pakistan – make sure you are immunised
Pakistan is one of the top five countries in the world having the highest proportion of children who have not been vaccinated against measles. With this amount of infection in the country, travellers to Pakistan (and in particular Punjab & Sindh), should make sure they are immune to this serious disease. Already in 2013 there have been over 25,000 reported cases, and nearly 150 children have died in Pakistan from this completely preventable disease.
Childhood infection confers lifelong immunity – those who may not be immune should have a total of two doses of MMR vaccine.

Our First Crystalens Workshop And Brunch A Huge Success
The first Eye Consultants of Texas Crystalens Workshop and Brunch was recently held June 29, 2013 at our Grapevine offices. This was open to anyone who had a Crystalens® intraocular lens (IOL) implant or is considering Crystalens. In addition, area Optometrists who managed Crystalens patients were also invited.
We are very proud that over 50 people attended who were eager to learn how to get the most out of Crystalens implants. What’s more, many of our guests requested that we do this again, and often.
Starting at 10:00 AM, guests were treated to a free brunch. This allowed people from across Dallas/Fort Worth to meet, share experiences, and discuss their common interest in Crystalens. This was followed by Eye Consultants of Texas founder, Phillips Kirk Labor, MD who discussed the importance of eye exercises and other important aspects for improving post-surgery results. Also appearing was his wife, Dr. Penny Labor, a Crystalens patient herself, who discussed her own procedure and post-surgery experiences.
Patty Turknett, one of Dr. Labor’s Crystalens patients in attendance, said of the event:
“Thanks for taking the time to explain our cataract surgery and for providing a testimony for the Crystalens. It was very informative and interesting. I’m inspired to take my glasses off during my work day. When I walked out to my car [after the event], there was a pair of reading glasses on the ground, so someone must have thrown them down! It was a great visual for me to do the same thing literally.”
Dr. Labor is considered one of the top Crystalens surgeons due to the number of successful procedures he has performed. Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodative presbyopia-correcting IOL that corrects cataracts and presbyopia (the need for “readers”) – “accommodative” meaning the lens moves naturally with the eye. Extremely effective, Crystalens allows for a more complete range of vision at near, intermediate and far distances than other lenses used today. Recently, manufacturer Bausch & Lomb introduced the TRULIGN Crystalens Toric IOL, which allows for a broader range of vision while correcting astigmatism and presbyopia at the same time. We now offer TRULIGN, which is the first FDA-approved toric lens of its kind.
Look for more information coming about future Crystalens Workshop and Brunch events, as well as the new TRULIGN™ Crystalens Toric IOL. In the meantime, call our office in Grapevine at 877-516-4364 to learn more. We’re conveniently located to both Dallas and Fort Worth.
Major outbreak of Typhoid in Malawi
There have been 30,000 confirmed cases of typhoid fever each month so far this year at Malawi’s central hospital. This disease is spread by food or water contaminated with typhoid organisms (often as a result of inadequate handwashing by the cook or consumer).
Travellers should take care to with hand hygiene and source food or drink from clean and reputable establishments. Drink only water that is pure, and use it to clean the teeth as well.
There is a worldwide shortage of typhoid vaccine at present, and those travelling to areas where clean water is unobtainable should do their best to obtain the vaccine before travel.

Grochmal Eye Center in the News with New Technology
The Grochmal Eye Center is a Baltimore LASIK surgery practice, offering complete and comprehensive eyecare for the entire family. Dr. Jay C. Grochmal is announcing the addition of the Cirrus™ HD-OCT by Zeiss, which he says helps him visualize and analyze the status and health of the retina. In particular, the Cirrus™ technology allows him to assess the health of his patients’ eyes prior to performing a number of procedures, including traditional cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange.
The Grochmal Eye Center was founded in 1978, and continues to provide state-of-the-art eye care and laser eye surgery procedures, such as PRK and LASIK in Maryland under the leadership of Dr. Jay C. Grochmal. As part of their commitment to the cutting-edge of ophthalmic technology, Dr. Grochmal is announcing the latest addition to the practice: the Cirrus™ HD-OCT by Zeiss. He says the new technology will help him and his staff diagnose any changes in the macula caused by different diseases, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma. He adds that early detection of these diseases will enable him to start treatment before permanent vision loss occurs.
Zeiss is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies. Founder Carl Zeiss was the first to commercialize the OCT technology, and the first to deliver the high definition 3D maps created by the Cirrus™ HD-OCT. Dr. Grochmal says the new technology not only helps him detect potentially damaging eye conditions, but also helps him improve the overall level of care he can offer his patients. The printouts from the OCT are very helpful, according to Dr. Grochmal, as they aid in educating his patients and help them gain a better understanding of the disease and procedure.
Whether he is performing refractive or cataract surgery, LASIK or PRK, Dr. Grochmal says he and his team tirelessly pursue the latest advancements in eye care and laser eye surgery to ensure their patients receive the best care available. “The advancements in ophthalmology in just the last ten years are astounding; staying on top of these developments is essential to our continued dedication to providing state-of-the art treatment. Our patients deserve only the best, and that is what we constantly strive to offer.”

Stephanie Sears – Nutritional Therapist
At Abundant Health Center, LLC we are pleased to introduce Stephanie Sears, NTP as our resident Nutritional Therapist. Here is more information on Stephanie and her work.
As a Certified Nutritional Therapist I can help you on your path to optimum health.
I have had bad allergies my entire life. When I learned that by changing my diet and eliminating certain foods I could feel as though I never had allergies.
While researching all of the ways to cure allergies naturally, I came across many simple explanations that linked the allergic symptoms I was experiencing (and many other health issues) to the food we put into our bodies. Once I cleaned up my diet it immediately cleared up my allergy symptoms. Then many of my digestive problems also started to disappear.
On this journey I became increasingly interested in how our bodies work and how important it is to eat clean, nourishing foods. I began to realize how many people endure life feeling sick and take pills that only hide the problems. Then I found a way that I could start to help other people feel better, I found the Nutritional Therapy Association.

Can you travel abroad with cancer?
Can you travel abroad with cancer? The answer to this is dependent on many factors – your specialist doctor will have the final answer.
There is nothing specific that stops cancer patients from flying on planes. It is still possible for cancer sufferers to get travel insurance and the majority of airlines are exceedingly helpful when it comes to providing specific needs, whether it’s a special seat on the plane, dietary or medical requirements.
However, on many occasions, some elements of travelling abroad can be too demanding on cancer sufferers’ weakened bodies.
Physical demands
Cancer sufferers can often become too tired and weak to withstand long journeys. For some, even travelling to and from the airport can be physically demanding. It’s worth bearing in mind how noisy and humid airports can be and that you often have to sit for hours at a time, which may be a problem for those with an increased risk of blood clots.
Many doctors won’t recommend travelling too soon after major treatments, such as chemotherapy because patients are likely to have a weakened immune system.
It is vital to let airlines know of any medical requirements that may be needed on a flight well in advance of your departure date. Some may seek confirmation from your doctor that you are fit to fly.
Flying abroad
You will need to arrange travel insurance before you fly abroad, so that you don’t have to pay for any medical treatment you may need whilst out of the country.
Some cancer sufferers have found it hard to arrange affordable cover, because many insurers see them as too much of a risk. However, there are number of insurers which specialise in providing affordable premiums for those with pre-existing medical conditions. These specialist companies have staff with the expertise to ask customers the right questions and therefore provide a more accurate assessment of a customer’s risk. This allows them to offer more affordable cover.
It is important for passengers to be fully prepared with all the medication that might be needed during their trip, and in some countries a doctor’s letter may be required in order to bring certain medications into the country. Make a note of where the nearest hospital is and let hotel staff know about any special requests.
Some countries may present more of a risk to cancer sufferers than others. Any countries which require vaccinations may be problematic and this should definitely be discussed with your cancer specialist & a specialist travel health practitioner.
Countries that are endemic for malaria & yellow fever should not be visited by those with weak immune systems, and some vaccinations should not be given within six months of completing treatment. A lot of cancer sufferers are keen to travel abroad, especially if they feel they are losing the battle and might not have long left to live. They might want to visit family or visit a destination they have always wanted to see. As long as the right preparations are made, it may still be possible to do your dream trip.

Cataracts | Triggers and Treatment
While it’s normal for our eyesight to start to decline when we get older, there are certain conditions that can make that happen much more quickly. Cataracts are an incredibly common cause of vision loss, affecting over half of all Americans over the age of 65. So what exactly are cataracts, and what are the treatment options available?
Triggers
A cataract is the clouding of our eye’s natural lens, and is typically brought about due to aging – though it is not considered a normal part of the aging process. This clouding is a result of protein buildup in the lens, and can worsen over time. In a normal eye, the lens will be clear, allowing light to pass through it and reach the retina, or the light-sensitive tissue in the back of eye. In eyes that have developed cataracts, the lens is cloudy, causing vision to become blurred. While is there no definitive evidence on what causes cataracts, researchers believe there are certain risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, and prolonged ultraviolet light exposure.
As cataracts develop, patients initially may not experience any symptoms. However, this condition is progressive and with time, patients may experience hazy or blurred vision, reduced vision at night and in bright light, double vision, frequent prescription changes in eyeglasses or contact lenses, and yellowish vision. As these symptoms can worsen over time, this leaves many patients wondering what their treatment options are.
Treatment
The standard treatment for cataracts is cataract surgery; the most commonly performed surgical procedure in the US. With a success rate of over 90%, this is a strong option for patients whose cataracts have begun to interfere with their daily life.
A minimally-invasive procedure, cataract surgery works to remove your eye’s damaged lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens, known as an IOL. Your surgeon will make a small incision in the eye, and insert a thin ultrasound probe that works to break up the cataract. Following this, the cloudy lens will suctioned out and replaced with the intraocular implant. The entire procedure is typically painless, performed in under an hour, and can help you once again achieve clear vision. It’s important to always talk to your surgeon before your procedure, as there are a number of factors that need to be discussed — including the type of IOL you want, and any surgical risks.
