Think You’re Too Old for Laser Vision Correction? Study Suggests that LASIK Works in Older Patients

If you’re in your 40s, 50s or 60s, you may think you’re too old to undergo LASIK surgery.  Think again!  WebMD, a leading source in medical news, reports on one study demonstrating the effectiveness of laser eye surgery in older patients.  Citing research from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, the article suggests that “laser surgery corrects vision for patients in [their] 40s, 50s and 60s.”

The study looked at 424 LASIK patients between the ages of 40 and 69.  According to the article, following their surgery, “20/30 vision … was restored in 86% to 100% of eyes corrected for nearsightedness and 80% to 84% of eyes corrected for farsightedness.”  Even those in their 60s?  Yes, WebMD goes on to explain that “Patients in their 60s were just as likely to have good outcomes as those in their 40s and 50s.”

Is LASIK Right for You?

This study brings up an interesting question: Who is a good candidate for LASIK surgery?  While there is no single formula for determining a good LASIK candidate, here are some general guidelines.

A good LASIK candidate:

  • …is in good general health.
  • …has good eye health and is free of eye conditions such as cataracts, chronic corneal infections or keratoconus.
  • …is of a certain age, typically 21 years old.
  • …has a cornea of appropriate shape and thickness.

There are several other factors that need to be discussed before choosing laser vision correction.  The only way to do that is to schedule a consultation with a qualified LASIK surgeon.

BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers

Dr. Grochmal has again expanded his services for his patients, now, to include BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers to help soften the fine lines of maturing. He has chosen BOTOX® Cosmetic because of its proven track record and outstanding results. Where BOTOX® Cosmetic is not effective, one will have the option of having Juvederm (a dermal filler) injected to help eliminate more permanently the skin folds around the nose and mouth.

Dr. Grochmal is excited to be able to offer these treatments to complement his already extensive oculoplastic repertoire.   Please call the office for more information,  410-697-4090.

Top 5 Patient Benefits of iLASIK™

Since its inception, laser vision correction has been changing the lives of our patients, enhancing vision and reducing or eliminating our patients’ dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses.  Now, our practice is proud to offer what many consider to be the most advanced LASIK system available: iLASIK™.  Not sure what this cutting-edge procedure is all about?

Here is our list of the Top 5 Patient Benefits of iLASIK:

  1. Fully-customized procedure. iLASIK is not a one-size-fits-all procedure.  Rather, using cutting-edge 3D eye mapping, iLASIK creates a one-of-a-kind image that is used to guide your LASIK procedure.  This unique “roadmap” means a fully-customized procedure in keeping with your unique anatomy and medical needs.
  2. Completely bladeless. Where some LASIK systems rely on metal blades, iLASIK creates a corneal flap using a precise laser.  This completely blade-free system is an ideal alternative for those hesitant about “going under the knife.”  What’s more, this method often results in better and faster healing following the procedure.
  3. Cool laser technology. A second laser – the one used to make the actual vision correction – can be understood as a “cool laser.”  Using pain-free, ultraviolet light, iLASIK works to reshape the cornea and achieve better vision.  What’s more, vision correction takes only seconds per eye.
  4. Iris registration. Cutting-edge iris registration technology ensures that iLASIK’s laser remains aligned, even if you move your eye.  This offers not only a more precise procedure, but very often a quicker procedure as well.
  5. Most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better. Of course, the most important benefit of iLASIK is its remarkable results.  And, while each patient’s results will vary, most iLASIK patients achieve 20/20 vision or better following the procedure.

Clinical trials aid PSC diagnosis and treatment

Jayant A. Talwalkar, M.D., a hepatologist with the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Mayo Clinic Transplant Center in Rochester, Minn., discusses diagnosis, complications, liver transplantation, and Mayo’s role in the development of new diagnostic tests and effective therapies for patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).

Dr. Talwalkar notes that PSC is the last major liver disease without effective treatment. There is currently no effective medical therapy to halt disease progression and so avoid complications such as liver failure or bile duct cancer for patients with PSC. PCS is considered an autoimmune condition. It develops silently, most often in patients 40-50 years.

Dr. Talwalkar’s team focuses on clinical trials for the development of diagnostic tests and effective drug therapies for PSC, before transplant is needed. Mayo specialists see several hundred patients with PSC each year.

Spine-health Named Top 50 Most Visited Website

Spine-health.com is proud to announce that it was recently ranked one of the top 50 most visited health websites, according to ComScore, a global leader in measuring the digital world.

Spine-health.com joins the large general health websites that make up the bulk of the top 50, and was one of the few “vertical” websites – sites that focus in on a particular aspect of health. Spine-health.com focuses exclusively on the spine, and covers conditions that cause back and neck pain.

Premium smart lens patients the real stars of our latest video

Eye Consultants of Texas has just launched a new video featuring actual Fort Worth metro area patients telling their stories. These patients had premium smart lens implants as part of their cataract surgery or as a clear lens extraction. More specifically, these included Crystalens, ReSTOR and AcrySof Toric lens patients.

The video was intentionally unscripted to allow a patient to simply talk and feel comfortable in sharing their story. The goal was to get true heartfelt stories, and to genuinely capture each patient’s expressions and individual personality.

“We are beyond pleased,” Dr. Labor said. “It was very gratifying to see my patients speak so freely about how well they were treated by me, and, more importantly, how happy they were with my staff.” Each patient agreed to appear without compensation, to which Dr. Labor added, “The fact that they voluntarily gave of their time is, in many ways, what means the most. I can’t thank them enough!”

To learn more about Crystalens, ReSTOR, AcrySof Toric or other premium smart lenses we offer, please call our Grapevine office at 877-516-4364. We are conveniently located to all of Dallas/Fort Worth.

The curious metal art object on our wall, explained

Part of building our new Grapevine facility in 2010 included a commissioned piece of art to further add a more interesting, less clinic-like environment for our patients. If you’ve ever been to our office, it’s not hard to miss. It’s located in the main hallway leading to our exam rooms with various eye care instruments, eye charts, and Eye Consultants of Texas elements in steel.

Since we unveiled this piece of art we’ve had lots of questions, including “how was that done,” and “was it hard to do?” The entire piece is actually made up of several individual pieces installed on the wall to create a textured effect. Each was hand drawn onto steel, cut out with a water torch, then finished to give it a copper-like appearance to coordinate with the copper throughout our building.

We simply wanted something different without being too “out there.” We’re glad our patients appreciate that it helps makes our Opthalmology office feel less like a medical facility; especially since it’s made of steel, and not so easy to remove!
